Las Cruces New Mexico to Ozona Texas

Thursday, April 25 Day Three Continued

There is a frontage road along the highway, and we comment that there are no bicyclists.  Of course, just as we said that, we spotted a guy, walking his bike, with a bed roll, plastic bags, etc.  Ok, that was no "cyclist!"

The semi trucks are unrelenting - and you'd better get out of their way.  It reminds us of the haul road in Alaska.  The road definitely belongs to the trucks.

At last, we come to the New Mexico border.  What do you call this sign?  What is the opposite of "understatement?"  I'm sure there are beautiful parts of New Mexico, but  I-10 doesn't take you to them!

There is a little sign welcoming us to Texas!  What's up with that?  The New Mexico sign was much bigger! In fact the Texas sign was so small, we almost missed it.  Didn't even get a picture!

The terrain changes once again, as we began to see the limestone that makes up such a huge part of West Texas.

One of the interesting things about entering West Texas; you are still closer to San Diego than you are the eastern border of Texas.  It is 879 miles to Beaumont, Texas.

Saw a deer crossing sign and was thinking "yeah, right, " when John spotted a deer laying by the fence, "munching away," as he put it.  This is such desert like country it is hard to believe there are deer.

There are some interesting mesas along the landscape  all the same height and evidence of some geologic phenomenon which escapes me at the moment.

Diesel out here is $3.85.  Subway is the dominant fast food restaurant, and the Flying J is the main
gas station.  We are encountering interminable wind.  And we are beginning to see vast fields of wind turbines and small oil rigs, the kind that look like birds pecking the ground.

There are storm clouds looming up ahead and the sun is getting low behind us.

Next question:  where to spend the night.  It is getting late and towns are few and far between.  And, there in the distance ... Ozona, Texas!
