After leaving Las Vegas, we are passing through some really pretty country, lots of buttes and highly colored mineral deposits.
We are passing the Pecos River and the Pecos National Historic Park. There is a Glorietta Christian Conference Center out here as well, and we can see the buildings of this huge complex from the road.
Somewhere out here, we pass Apache Canyon, billed as the Civil War's Gettysburg of the West. The Confederates had established territory in southern Arizona and New Mexico, with the intent of capturing the gold and silver mines in southern California, plus the ports, and the Colorado territory.
Although they had forced the Union back, they lost their supply train and their horses and mules were killed, forcing them back into Arizona and Texas. It was called the Battle of Glorietta Pass.
We are getting close to Santa Fe, and we hurriedly get around this guy. Why do you always feel they are about to lose their load at any minute?
We decided to go into Santa Fe, just to take a quick look around. Lots of restaurants with a Latin flavor.
There are many people downtown, and as we get closer, the roads get narrower and more crowded. All of a sudden this doesn't seem to be such a good idea…
We made it all the way to the end and saw the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, and then turned on a narrow street and found our way back to a major road.
It really is a charming city, and one we'd like to explore, but we must move on…
Our clouds are looming up ahead, and of course, we are expecting a storm.
Another change in terrain occurs as we slip past Albuquerque and head south.
