Well, this was a surprising town. The census says the 2010 population was about 10,000 but it looked a lot bigger. It's right on the Mongollon Rim which runs the length of Arizona, mostly sandstone and limestone.
The town got its name because of --- what else?---a card game. Two guys who decided the town wasn't big enough for the two of them, so they settled it with a card game, as one said, "Show low, you win." The other guy pulled the deuce of clubs, the lowest card in the deck and laid claim to 100,000 acres. The main street is called Deuce of Clubs.
The town's main industry is tourism, and service for the surrounding area. I would imagine the hunting and fishing in the area is superb.
It was a very pleasant feeling place, and there was building going on everywhere. They have 13 percent unemployment, and a negative job growth, but they predict to grow by 19.5 percent in the next ten years. Now that's being optimistic! But, they have no property tax, no bed tax, and a low sales tax compared to the rest of Arizona, so I guess they expect to attract a lot of new residents!
At any rate, we kind of liked the place. It was surrounded by forests and just seemed to have a positive vibe!
