Really! Devils Lake

Sunday June 23, Day 62

Today is our son Chris and his wife Kayl's first anniversary.  Happy Anniversary!

We spent the night in Grand Forks, North Dakota.  It was a campground on the edge of farming fields. Nothing special, just a place to stop for the night.  We are only going  about 100 miles today.

We were going to head to spend the night tonight in Minot, ND, but the one campground that seemed most prominent got bad reviews, so we headed to Devils Lake, which had several options.
We are still under the rain cloud! That's us in the eastern half of ND.

Its pouring.

Lots of farmland and deep, rich soil.

It looks a little lighter on the horizon, but that may be wishful thinking!

We are beginning to see lots of potholes filled with water.  And out in the middle of many of them are
what appears to be bird feeders, or nests,  round cylinders filled with straw or something.

We pass towns with names like Niagara and Michigan.  The wind is right on our nose, and makes our gas mileage really drop so it's good we aren't going too far today.

When we got out of the car at one point, we found the lock to John's storage boxes on the back  bumper.  We had gone 72 miles, and it hadn't moved.  Lucky!  But a reminder that we both need to make an inspection all around the camper before we take off.

The water is looking precariously close to these farm houses.

All of a sudden we see what looks like white caps, and then realize it is!  With no end in sight.

There are dead trees in the water which shows this lake is rising. The wind is fierce, but it is blowing the clouds to the east, and we are going west, so that's a good thing.

As we come in to the town of Devils Lake, we see the signs for the Spirit Lake Indian Tribe.  We are headed this direction to a campground.

There is construction equipment everywhere, building up a dike around the edge of the lake.

Trees in the middle have been killed by the water, and those of the edge are dying.

This looks like the ocean!  We don't have phone reception, so it's impossible to know that this is all about.

The campground we were going to is part of the Indian casino.  We took a look at it and decided to try another.  So we went back the way we came.  This is feeling really eerie.

There aren't many boats out in this wind, and the few that are, are hugging the shore.  I have always wondered why you need to wear camouflage gear to fish!

This looks like a hopeless task.

There are people out fishing along this new bern.

Back in town, we look at this American flag, blowing straight out, with wind out of the West. It hasn't let up at all!
And we can see submerged farmhouses.

The road into the new campsite we have picked is freshly made.  As we cross it, we comment that if the good Lord is willing and the creek don't rise, we can get out of here in the morning!
