TR and Elkhorn Cabin

Tuesday, June 25, (Cont'd)

In Medora, we got a tour of the cabin Roosevelt lived in from the Elkhorn Ranch.    It had been dismantled and put back together several times, including a stint at the World's Fair.  But it was finally brought to the Visitors Center here.

Pretty simple surroundings for a man of wealth from the East, but I guess that's what he loved about it.

The house is made of Ponderosa Pine, which is not native to this area.  It was originally to be used for the railroad, but they didn't use it, so Roosevelt bought it and had it floated down river.

Pretty wood.  The carvings were done at the World's Fair.

There was some doubt as to whether the cabin assembled here was really the original, but this maltese cross carved into one of the end pieces convinced him that it was genuine.

Buffalo hide as a bedspread.

This is one of the few original pieces of TR's - his dresser.

He had a cook and two ranch hands that lived here.  They slept in the attic.  There was also a cellar for storage.

Here's his maltese cross brand

And a picture of the camper against a backdrop of the Badlands.
