Very close to the White Mountain is Bretton Woods. OK, history buffs, tell me what happened here?
In 1944, 730 delegates from all 44 allied nations, met here to regulate the international monetary and financial order after World War II. They met from July 1 to July 22 and signed agreements to set up the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), not to mention the Gold Standard. They also proposed an International Trade Organization, but that proposal failed. What was agreed upon became operational in 1945 after the war ended and the countries ratified the agreement.
This is the resort where they met.
This is what it looked like when we drove through. It is now owned by Omni.
There was scaffolding all around it, and major renovation going on. We had made our lunch before we got there, so we drove through, eating our sandwiches in the car. I told John we could way we ate at the Mount Washington Resort! (Well, we did!)
Things haven't changed much, at least on the outside, from these early pictures.
