A day in Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Thursday, May 9, Day 17

Last night, we drove east below the Winston-Salem, Greensboro and Raleigh Durham cities of North Carolina and found a small rv park south of Chapel Hill in Moncore, near Jordan Lake.

I had called ahead to make sure there was room.  And when I told  the man my name was Dixie, his voice really perked upl  He said that anybody named Dixie was always welcome around here!
His phone message, I swear,  had said "leave a danged message." but he waited on the side of the road for us and called just before we got there to make sure we could find it.  He was reallhy nice!
The park only has 20 spaces, and we have prime spot right next to the woods.

His son and grandson came along on an ATVand the son had a pistol lashed to the dashboard. He said he was going out coyote hunting when a guy came jogging through the woods.  The guy said his son was playing Little League nearby and he thought he would jog while he was waiting.

The son said he didn't think it was a good idea to be jogging through the woods 'cause you never know who was shootin' out there.   He said the coyotes are new to the area, coming in about 5 years ago.  I don't know why he felt the need to shoot them.
At any rate, we are in gun toting territory, and guess we'd better get used to it!

This is our weather report for today.  See that gray area over on the East Coast?  That's us!  It rained pretty hard all night.

The next morning was our first opportunity in a long time to have a leisurely morning and breakfast.  John wanted to show the computer with breakfast.  This is our chance to catch up.  We spent time cleaning out the trailer, which had seen a lot of muddy shoes over the past two weeks.  And today is a beautiful day.  The mosquitoes aren't too prevalent yet, and it is pleasant to sit out.

Our goal today is to meet one of John's relatives, whom we've never met before.  Of course, I've been writing to them for a long time.  Walton Avery is John's cousin. His mother Florence and John's grandfather Harvey were brother and sister.

Last night, our host drew us a map on how to get to Chapel Hill.  He started out by putting Chapel Hill (CH) on the map, and then realized it wasn't quite to scale.  He told us that down the road, the Court house sat right in the middle of the road, with a roundabout around it.   He said, "it's real easy if you knowed where your goin'.  If you've never been there before, tain't so easy."  But he patted his cell phone and told us that if we got lost the next day, to call him and he'd help us out.

We had a wonderful visit with Walton and Laura.  He is a retired Pathologist and  his wife Laura is an Interior Decorator.   Their daughter Claire is just about to graduate from school in Savannah, GA. She is a jewelry designer.  They had both been out playing golf before we got there.  We went to a lovely Italian restaurant, Tarrantini's for dinner, exchanged a lot of stories, and all decided that we would like to get together again.  What a great visit!

We went back to the same campsite for the night.  When we saw the courthouse in the middle of the road, we knew we were headed in the right direction!
