Right outside of the Special Operations Museum is the Fayetteville Train Station. John was very familiar with it, having gone there often to catch a train to New York or to Florida, both places his family lived while he was in the service. We were in Fayetteville for about 10 months in 1967.
This prompted us to try to remember where we had actually lived. John remembered Woodside Avenue, and when we looked it up, we were just a few blocks away!
We couldn't remember the exact address, but we had a park across the street, where we used to have parties. We were one of the few married couples in his group, and shish-ka-bobs were a signature party item. We made them on straightened out coat hangers. One time we made over 100 of them. This was a hungry crowd of soldiers!
Well, we found it at least where it used to be. It was a brand new brick duplex when we moved in. And we were the first occupants. There was a large wooded area behind us, and a small creek that ran by.
That used to be all woods! In the left bottom corner, where Bragg Blvd intersects Hay Street, is the location of the Warfare Museum and the train station. We would have been able to walk to both of them. It's only a few blocks.
John is standing at the end of the driveway. The house would have been to his left.
Here he is at the top of the driveway, looking to make sure we have the right place!
This is the park across the street, Rowan Park. No doubt about it, this was the place. There are houses on either side, so why did ours not survive? Good memories is all we have. Oh and a couple of pictures in the driveway of John's 1967 Camaro Convertible, red with a white rag top, that he bought off the showroom floor when he graduated from OCS!
