Alabama and Gene Autry's sidekick

There are lots of churches along the highway, each one with a marquee carrying a clever sign:
For example:  Forecast for tomorrow:  God reigns and the Son Shines.

We pass through Addison, Alabama, which is proclaimed by a sign saying Pat Buttram was born there.
I hadn't heard that name in a long time!
Pat Buttram – Addison, Alabama.

1915-1994.  He was originally a sidekick to Roy Rogers, but then Rogers had too many of them and he became Gene Autry’s sidekick.  He appeared in over 40 movies, and 100 episodes of Gene Autry’s TV program.  He also played Mr. Haney on Green Acres.  And he was the voice of  Napoleon (hound dog) in The Aristrocats, Eddie in Rugrats, had a cameo role in  Back to the Future Part III, and as Cactus Jake in Garfield and Friends.

Buttram had a voice that “never quite made it through puberty,”  sounding like a handful of gravel in a Mix Master, according to his own description.  He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
