Bar Harbor Maine to Plainfield New Hampshire - Turning West

Thursday, June 6, Day 45

Here's our trip so far:  We have gone 5,259 miles.  From San Diego to Bar Harbor, Maine.  We have gone through 19 states, some more than once.  And today, we head west.

Sunrise this morning was at 4:39 a.m.  I woke up because all the birds were going nuts!  If I were up on Cadillac Mountain, I could boast that I was the first to see the sunrise on the East Coast.  As it is, I'm pretty close to Cadillac Mountain, so I'll take being one of the first.

Here's a cupola and weathervane store - one of several.  Another store I saw, out in the middle of nowhere, among the woods, was one selling only circular staircases!

Headed through wooded areas today - toward New Hampshire.

So many bogs and shallow lakes - mosquito country - but pretty.

Lots of rolling hills and pretty farms.

I've seen lots of these bushes, and many flowering trees, none of which I can identify.

Tranquil lakes which must be great in the summertime.  But even though it's June, the temperatures outside are staying in the 50's, low 60's.  It will probably be a while before these warm up.

We see lots of moose crossing signs, but have yet to see a moose.  Some of these signs say Moose Crossing 3 miles.  But the deer crossings are only for 2.  I wonder who checks with the moose and deer to make these decisions.

Up ahead are the white mountains.  And Mt. Washington.  Although it is only 6,288 feet high, it is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States.   Mt. Washington is often in the news for its erratic weather patterns, high winds, deep snows, low temperatures, etc.  It has a cog railroad which we will visit later.

Things along the way:  Wild turkeys in a cemetery, a sign on a church announcing a Bean and Casserole Supper, a sign saying "Don't Cry Because It's Over, Smile Because it Happened."

Crossing through towns called Peru and West Paris, crossing the Appalachian Trail, seeing a sign to  Six Gun City (we turned before we got there), and a sign for  Cow Pie Bingo.  There are so many more signs for Moose in New Hampshire.   The Moose must respect the state lines.

Late in the day we arrive at the home of our friends Per and Helle Frost in Plainfield, New Hampshire.  John and Per were business associates for many years.  We plan to be here a few days, and John and he plan to go hiking.   Per is an avid hiker!  We are hoping for cooperation from the weather!
