Red's Eats

Tuesday, June 4, Day 43

Today after we watched the guys  reset buoys, we went back into Wiscasset to partake of  famous place for Lobster Rolls called Red's Eats.   I think I showed a picture of it on our way south.  It's just a little hole in the wall, about the size of a minivan.  And it's known for the most awesome lobster rolls ever, i.e. legendary!   Since I just had the one and only one I've ever had in Boston, I don't have much to go by in the way of comparison. So we'll see.

Red's Eats sits on the side of Route 1.  It opened in 1938 and in 1954 it moved to this location. The view you see here is as if I were standing by Red's.  (I am actually crossing the road to get to Red's and stopped to take this picture!)

Traffic on this road often exceeds 25,000 cars a day during the summer.  The people who were in line when we got there are virtually standing alongside Route 1.  You can see John on the right hand side, getting in line.  In the summertime, the wait can exceed an hour.  The locals complain and want to change the location of Red's since the lines slow down traffic.  But it hasn't happened.  The town fathers know a good thing when they see it!

Lots of signs to look at as you wait.  And a long list of publications that have featured the place.   It's a food writer's dream!

They also have this sign for blueberry cake.  John like usual, said, "Oh let's wait on that.  We'll have plenty of time for blueberries."  To which I replied, "Not!  You only go around once and let's enjoy it while it's right in front of us."

They tell you that each lobster roll has the equivalent of at least the meat of a one pound lobster in it.  The prices aren't listed anywhere.  If you have to ask, you shouldn't be there!  (Ours cost $16.25 ea.)

And this is what you get, folks!   It's hard to mess up fresh lobster that has just been picked.  John got butter, I got mayo and we shared (the condiments, I mean.) That's a buttered piece of toast, about an inch thick, under the lobster meat.

And as for the blueberry cake ........
It was scrumptious!  It was very dense and had cinnamon in it.  I must find the recipe on line.
