Boston and the McCarthy's

We were in Boston Friday night, Waltham, to be exact.  Liz cooked clams and sausages on the grill when we got there.  It was very hot and humid.  The boys had hamburgers, and then settled down to get ready for what was going to be a very busy weekend.

Saturday, June 1, Day 40

Kevin, Liz's husband, was off  to work, and Liz took us to the Watertown Diner for breakfast.

You may have seen this diner on the news for several consecutive days.  It was the backdrop for CNN and Anderson Cooper in the reporting of the episodes surrounding the Boston bombing.  Waltham and Watertown are right next to each other and they are small.  Liz had been at our place when the bombing
occurred.  When she and the boys flew into Boston at midnight, they were part of the lockdown the next day while the police pursued the two brothers responsible for the bombings.  As we drove to the diner, Liz pointed out where various events occurred -- the funeral parlor in front of which the older brother Tamberlane was killed.  The restaurant where the older brother worked.   The dumpsters in which they threw the casing of the fireworks from which they hd extracted explosive materials, the street where the police cornered Dzokhar in the boat.

It's amazing how much local news there continues to be about the bombings, the recovering victims, etc. that we never hear nationally.  The press has moved on.

Finnbar, Liz'e youngest waits for his breakfast.  His team the Tigers have two games this weekend.

John plays a game with Finn.

Jack is doing his own drawing.  His team is the Diamondbacks. He will also have two games.

After breakfast, we walk to where Kevin has his business, which is a frame shop.

He has a partnership with the glass and mirror company and they work on projects together.  They do large installations of glass mirrors in hotels and restaurants, for example.  Also, Kevin does custom framing of pictures.  He has the only shop of this type around the area, and people drive from all over to get work done by Kevin.  He has some pretty famous clients.

Finn practices his pitching in a mirror while we are taking the tour.

Did you ever wonder how they get those diagonal staples in the corners of frames?  This is the machine that does it.

Jack copies a piece of artwork that is waiting to be framed.

Right next door to Kevin's shop is a house that used to belong in the Coolidge family, as in Calvin Coolidge.  His family settled in this area in the 1630's.   The house is now a beauty salon.

We are happily parked in the McCarthy's driveway.

The boys elementary school is just a short walk away.

John gave Finn a pep talk just before the game.  "O.K. Finn," he says, "I want to see some good catches, some good fielding, some good hitting, and pitching."

Fin gives him this contemptuous look and says, "There's a reason I was recruited!"

Jack was first base coach for Finn's game.

John had a blue raspberry icee to while away the time

In the afternoon it was Jack's turn.  Because it was so hot outside,  the waterpark was activated at the school, so Finn played, then went in the waterpark, then lunch, and Jack played, then more waterpark.

This is a result of a long day!

Liz and I did some shopping and then picked up some sushi and Thai food for dinner.

Later Saturday night, Liz, who is President of the PTO, took John and I to their first Fundraiser.
You should never have a drink without an umbrella in it, I always say!

When John and I left, Liz was boogying on down with some of the other parents.

Sunday, June 2, Day 41

Finn had an early game and then we went down to the harbor.

I am assuming that Finn drew this picture.  Both boys are excited about today's games.

We ate at the new Legal Seafoods Harbor.  I had my first Lobster Roll.  It's really Lobster On A Roll.  I wish I had known that earlier, because I was trying to visualize how they rolled lobster.

Kind of busy at the waterfront  - the Cambridge graduation was just letting out when we got there.

We went to the ICA building - it was so cold and windy out, we barely made it.  Liz and Finn posed for this picture in front of the lobby mural.

Then we raced back to see Jack play.   He had a terrific play at third, tagging a guy out.  Kevin says it was the first tag out of the season.  However, Jack also had to come out of the game at one point after he choked on a big gum ball his mother had just bought for him.  In trotting back to the sidelines, he hacked it up and had a quick recovery.  Kevin spotted the problem before any of us knew what happened.  Good thing Kevin's also out on the field coaching!

Liz is also in charge of the snack bar.  Even though she had worked the morning shift, she went to help when the lines got too long.  This girl does everything!

This boy got hit three times on the foot during the game, so Liz came to the rescue with a bag of frozen peas and a few tender words of sympathy.  However, a little slice of pizza seemed to take away more of the pain.

We went home after this second game of the day, and Liz cooked a pork tenderloin and fresh asparagus.  What a day!

Kevin broke open a bottle of some locally brewed, very scarce beer called Lunch.  The company only allows one bottle a customer.   The company supports whale conservation, and the beer is named after a whale that has a piece missing out of its fin, which was evidently something's lunch.   So they took the whale's name for their beer.  I have no idea how it tasted, but it had an interesting marketing campaign!

We had a fun and busy weekend with Liz and her family.   And now it's off to Maine tomorrow!
